81年に自身が結成したフレンチディスコユニットLove Internationalから”Airport Of Love”、”Dance On The Groove (And Do The Funk)”というコズミック古典大名作を発表し、90年代には「カンヌ映画祭殺人事件」、「ディディエ」などの映画音楽を手がけていたフランスの敏腕SSW/コンポーザーPhilippe Chanyによるキャリア初期83年発表のソロフルレングスLP。

グラミー賞受賞作品「アンタッチャブル」や「ニュー・シネマ・パラダイス」をはじめ、ここ日本でも03年放送のNHK大河ドラマ「武蔵 MUSASHI」のサウンドトラックを担当していたイタリアの映画音楽界最長老Ennio Morriconeや、「ダーティハリー」や「燃えよドラゴン」などの名作にその名前を刻むアルゼンチンの偉大な映像音楽作家Lalo Schifrin、60年代フランス映画音楽の礎を築いた巨匠Michel Magneといったそうそうたる先人たちにインスパイアされたという本作品。

プロデュースを手がけたフィメールディスコプロジェクトCaroline Loeb諸作でも聴くことのできる愛嬌溢れる鍵盤フレーズやファンキーなファズギターとともに、Philippe自身の全くやる気の感じられない脱力ヴォーカルが浮遊するメロウネス・シンセディスコ”Fiction”をはじめ、Serge Gainsbourg風を装うジャジーなシャンソンをチープに電化した”La Mystique Du Mâle”、西海岸を代表するジャズピアニストDave Brubeckのオリエンタルなピアノカヴァーを変拍子で刻んだナゾすぎるイタロチューン”Unsquare Dance”、アラビックなマントラ&フレーズが素晴らしく胡散くさい”Cairo Connection”などなど、コメディ/ファンタジー映画のワンシーンを映像喚起させる独創性に富んだ楽曲たちを収録。本作は、シャンソン、シンセポップ、イタロディスコ、バレアリック、ジャズから少しずつ抽出されたエッセンスを、AKAI、TR-808、 Jupiter 8、ギター、マイクといったヴィンテージな機材と、絶妙なユーモア感覚によってブレンド、アレンジされた世にも不思議なサントラ風レアブリーズ/ダンスライブラリ作品です。 


In 1981, Love International, the French disco unit he founded, released “Airport Of Love”, “Dance On The Groove (And Do The Funk )”, a great Cosmic Classic masterpiece, and a solo full-length LP released in 1983 by the talented French SSW/composer Philippe Chany, who in the 90’s was responsible for film music for “Cannes Film Festival Murder” and “Didier”.

He has composed music for Grammy Award winning films such as “Untouchable” and “New Cinema Paradise”, as well as soundtracks for the NHK Taiga drama “Musashi Musashi” broadcast in Japan in 2003. Inspired by the great Argentinean visual musician Lalo Schifrin, whose name is engraved on such masterpieces as “Dragon”, and the master musician Michel Magne, who laid the foundations of French film music in the 60’s, and many other predecessors.

It’s a mellow synth disco that features the same winsome keyboard phrases and funky fuzz guitars that can be heard on Caroline Loeb’s other productions and Philippe’s completely uninspired, de-energized vocals floating in the air. “Fiction”, “La Mystique Du Mâle”, a cheaply electrified jazzy chanson in the guise of Serge Gainsbourg, and the iconic West Coast jazz Pianist Dave Brubeck’s oriental piano cover in odd time signatures on the italo-tune “Unsquare Dance,” an oriental mantra and phrase that is wonderfully scandalous. Cairo Connection” is a collection of inventive songs that evoke scenes from comedy/fantasy films. It’s a magical blend of chanson, synthpop, italo-disco, Balearic, and jazz, blended and arranged with vintage equipment such as AKAI, TR-808, Jupiter 8, guitars, and microphones, and an exquisite sense of humor. This is a soundtrack-style rare breeze/dance library piece.
