自作のドラムマシンをKraftwerkに提供したりとエンジニアとしても知られるドイツのシンセサイザー奏者Dieter KolbとFranz Aumullerのワンオフプロジェクト4Dによって82年に発表された7”ダブルサイダー「Fauve Moderne/Sex Appeal」収録のカルトマシンファンク。

もともとこの人たち、シンセサウンドマニアからディスコフリークまで、その手のアレな人たちから崇拝されるアーリー80’sドイツ音楽史が生んだマッドシンセシスト集団Robotwerke/Supersempfftのフロントマン、今風に言うとセンターを張っていた2人で、クラウトロックやイタロディスコから拡張した世界観を、自作のドラムマシンやシンセサイザーで煮詰めに煮詰めてDaniele Baldelli翁も御用達の「Be A Man You Frog」や「I’m Gonna Make You Big」といったコレクターズアイテムとしても知られるコズミック古典をこの世に産み落とした局地的有名人です。

4Dは「Fauve Moderne/Sex Appeal」というたった1枚の7”をアウトプットするためにこの2人によって結成されたワンオフプロジェクトで、DieterとFranz以外にJean-Claude Hamilius, Ralf Titzeという耳馴染みのない名前もクレジットされていますが、結成経緯など詳しいことはその楽曲の内容と同じく謎に包まれています。

このダブルサイダーの片面に収録された本作「Sex Appeal」は、Robotwerke/Supersempfft専売特許のエグいシンセワークや牧歌的第六感は影を潜めていて、ひんやりDIYマシンビートをへんてこオリエンタルムードで覆った、どこか奇妙、どこか哀愁を纏って不思議とダンスへと誘う無国籍なマシナリーファンクとしてプロデュースされています。

オリジナルリリースは82年、自身のプライベートコレクティブWunderwerkeから。その後83年にVirgin, Carrereから相次いで再発盤がリリースされていて、唯一インストヴァージョンが収録されているVirgin盤がいちばんの市場価値をつけていますが、悲しいことにビビットでいなたさ全開なジャケではなくなってしまっていてあんまり興味が湧きません。

Originally, these guys, the frontman of Robotwerke/Supersempfft, the mad synthist collective born of early 80’s German music history, worshipped by synth maniacs to disco freaks and all that kind of thing, are now called The duo took a worldview that expanded from krautrock and italo-disco and boiled it down with home-made drum machines and synthesizers to create songs like “Be A Man You Frog” and “I’m Gonna Make”, which were also favorites of Daniele Baldelli. They are the local celebrities who brought to this world the cosmic classics known as collector’s items such as “You Big”.

4D is a one-off project formed by these two to produce a single 7″ album called “Fauve Moderne/Sex Appeal,” which also credits the unfamiliar names Jean-Claude Hamilius and Ralf Titze, in addition to Dieter and Franz, but the details of how it all came together are as shrouded in mystery as the songs themselves.

On the other side of the double-sided album, “Sex Appeal” is produced in a somehow strange, somehow melancholy, stateless Machinary Funk with a strange, somehow melancholy, dance-inducing, oriental mood over a cool, DIY machine beat, with no trace of the egregious synth work or pastoral sixth sense that was the monopoly of Robotwerke/Supersempft.

The original release was in 1982 on his private collective Wunderwerke. After that, Virgin and Carrere released a succession of re-releases in 1983, and the Virgin version is the only one with the instrumental version of the album that has the highest market value. It is not.
