60年代から70年代にかけてカルトな辺境音源を連べ撃ちにしていたフランスのレコードレーベルFiesta-Recordsから76年にリリースされたカメルーンのBarry Whiteとも称されるシンガーJo “JoJo” Tongoによるデビューアルバム収録楽曲、情熱のマイナーコードファンク。

カメルーンとフランスの懇ろな関係は以前Francis少年のくだりで紹介しましたが、この人もそのコネクションでカメルーンから渡仏したミュージシャンのひとりで、もともとは薬剤師の勉強のため渡仏した、とDiscogsに書いてありますが、どうしてこうなったのか見当もつきません。そもそもDiscogsに書くことなのかとも思いますが、まあとにかくこの曲の格好良さにすれば全てが小事。刹那的なブラスセクションや罪深いギターの調べが低いボトムラインとあいまった真性ディスコフリークから辺境グルーヴマニアまでのツボを突くハイブリッドなセッションに、Otis ReddingやWilson PickettといったUS神ソウルシンガーの影がチラつくJoJoの激情が横溢する、嫌が応でも魂が揺さぶられる超絶の格好良さ。何年か前にロンドンのニュージャズ/ファンクシーンの敏腕A&R、Nik WestonがSOIL&”PIMP”SESSIONSのラジオに出演したときにも紹介されていました。TR内ではこの辺りのアフロにまつわる音源は総じて通称パパ好みと言われています。

This passionate minor chord funk song is from the debut album of singer Jo “JoJo” Tongo, also known as Cameroon’s Barry White, released in 1976 on the French record label Fiesta-Records, which released a barrage of cult frontier material in the 60’s and 70’s.

According to Discogs, he was one of the musicians who came to France from Cameroon through the connection with Francis, and originally went to France to study medicine. I can’t get it. I don’t know if it’s something to write about on Discogs in the first place, but anyway, it’s all a small matter when it comes to the coolness of this song. The ephemeral brass section and sinful guitars, combined with a low bottom line, make for a hybrid session that will appeal to everyone from bona fide disco freaks to frontier groove-geeks, and JoJo’s got a few shades of US god-soul singers like Otis Redding and Wilson Pickett in his corner.
